Sonsierra Rioja Wines

Sonsierra is in San Vicente de la Sonsierra and is part of the municipality in the Spanish La Rioja wines region. Sonsierra means "from under the Sierra" - implying: "protected by the mountain range".

In 1179 La Rioja was ceded for all time to Castile, but the territory remained divided between the provinces of Burgos and Soria until the administrative reform of Riego in 1822 that created the province of Logroņo.

In 1980 Logroņoit changed its name to the province of La Rioja and in 1982 it became the autonomous community of La Rioja.

The climate is Mediterranean although Rioja Alta Comarca is a little wetter than Rioja Baja. Temperatures range from 11.8°C - 31.8°C and rainfall between 300 mm - 600 mm per annum. In winter the Cierzo wind blows constantly over the La Rioja region.
